Now 11 seminar rooms and over 60 offices are in use; a silver Open Test Haus for the students has been created; the Hangar with a 70 seat café is on it’s way; a landscape of terraces is longing for spring to come; a GDR-Caravan, the Nagetusch, acts as presidential meeting room in the 2nd floor; a 1:1 replica of George Bernhard Shaws  Writing Shed adorns the Gartenhaus; and the golden Moon Container awaits it’s finishing touches. Mrs. Ehringshausen probably is the coolest space producer in the world. She assembles blocks of  – at this point roughly 160 – Containers in such a speed and guides her team with such an ease, esprit and souvereign caution, that watching her work, you sometimes think, Zeppelin-Rental-Container-Mounting is a new trendsport. Assuming the “RSE” Letters on her Polo-Shirt stand for – let’s say:  a girl band she plays with in her leisure-time, is wrong: the three letters stand for her very own impressive company, Raumsysteme Ehringshausen, who assembled constructions out of Zeppelin Containers for big players like WM, VW, ILA, IFA, ETC

ContainerUni is a platform of exchange and wants to work as a space to develop new formats with other actors in the city. Eventhough ContainerUni is an intermediate buiding – it is the first full fledged Campus on the grounds of the former military base Fallenbrunnen. Next to academic and student life, it will host a multitude of events – and it is supposed to function as a public attractor.

The ContainerUni Lecture Series will discuss the function of a new University in a changing industrial city. On top of that, ContainerUni provides exciting spaces that want to be played and experimented with. Events and public talks, discussions and exhibitions will take place here. The many terraces of the building-complex provide great conditions for various festivals, that are already established at Fallenbrunnen  – like the Long Night of Music or Seekult – with additional stages.

ContainerUni – do-it-yourself: Taking Zeppelin University‘s demand of space and the architects layout as a starting point, students and employees begin to appropriate the planning-process, followed by the actual spaces of this temporary campus in Fallenbrunnen. An experimental design process gets going.

Especially the self-organized-student house, called Open Test Haus (OTH), is an essential element of this container campus, because it enables students to create a space that suits their personal needs. The OTH — sometimes lovelingly referred to as “Otti” — gives space to various student-projects, student-groups (such as ASHOKA, Rock your Life!, ZU- sports etc.) and hosts a kitchen, an experimental space to be defined and redefined, a play and sports zone, a studio / workshop and three rooftop terraces. All the desired rooms in “Otti” will be designed, decorated and coordinated by the students themselves.

Also the furniture in the social center (the Hangar), that holds the Coffeeshop Mundvoll and the Check-In Center, have been designed by the students. For instance, the 80 chairs for the Hangar were collected from private and institutional donors and then processed in an artistic manner.

The Hangar is not only a common area that allows students to socialize and work, but will also be the space that hosts official events of the university. The coffeshop Mundvoll welcomes the neighbouring students of DHBW and visitors from the surrounding workspaces (such as ZAB) all day.

With this slogan, the two artists Margit Czenki and Christoph Schäfer, launched a production of desires with ZU students and employees in autumn 2011.

An intense exchange started between the artists, architects quartier vier, and employees and students of Zeppelin University – a complex common oeuvre, a spatial experiment is in the making. The result as well as the process, challenge and shift the borders of academic teaching, of art, and of architecture.

The most significant building, conceptually and from its programming, is the centrally located Open Test Haus – a building designed, and self administred by the students: The Hausordnung does not apply.

The houses, assembled from standard office containers, were designed by architects and artists in close cooperation with the experts of Zeppelin Rentals. The new temporary buildings offer a variety of surprising views and relations between buildings. The space is organized in such a way, that it invites people to stay and to communicate. Furthermore it allows the visitors to develop new visual interactions with the surrounding buildings and its natural environment: unseen views into trees, orchards and the lake of constance wait for the new inhabitants.

The interior of the Open Test Haus will host various rooms for student-groups. For example, there will be an “Experimental Space”, which is an undefined space per se. Next to it, in the groud floor, there will be a “Game Zone”.  A lounge, a small kitchen, an art-studio/workshop and a balcony will be on the first floor, whereas the second floor gives room for a co-working-space for student initiatives and other students organizations ( that will be connected to an even bigger balcony). Last but not least: On the roof of the Open Test Haus will be a big terrace with a view onto the Lake of Constance and the Alps. Magnifique!
